All about the Lumbosacral joint, L5-S1

The Lumbosacral joint is the L5-S1 spinal motion segment that connects the lumbar spine and sacral spine in the lower back.                                                    Here the curvature of the spine changes, from a forward curve to a backwards curve.

Made up of the L5 and S1 vertebrae

This segments’ crucial role is transferring ‘loads’ from the spine to the pelvis and legs; this means it often receives a high level of mechanical stress making the area susceptible to injuries such as degeneration, disc herniation and/or nerve pain. Symptoms of these include (and are not limited to) sharp, shooting and/or searing pains in the buttock/,leg or foot, numbness in the lower extremities and weakness in the leg/foot muscles.

Luckily chiropractic care can help. Manipulation of the lumbar spine through adjustments may help relieve pain stemming from L5-S1. As well as this, a chiropractor may advise some stretches to perform, in addition to lifestyle changes like staying active and advice on how to reduce stress to the area in daily life – like a correct lifting technique
